Most outdoor sports are played on natural grass surfaces – make that, originally were played on natural grass. Synthetic sports surfaces have found favor like never before for football, soccer, baseball fields; tennis courts; golf applications; and many more. Artificial turf has become popular sports surfaces for a variety of reasons. Whether natural grass or artificial turf, sports surfaces in the athletic arena will take a beating functionally and aesthetically. Artificial turf sports surfaces tend to hold up best, showing less wear and performing at a higher level with all-weather playability. For natural grass sports surfaces to look good and play at performance levels requires lots of maintenance: watering, costly in terms of money and natural resources; and fertilizer, which may or may not be kind to the athletes’ skin. Modern artificial turf sports surfaces provide shock absorbency equal to or superior to natural grass, with lifelike “foot release.” Artificial sports surfaces, which acquired a bad reputation for safety in the Astroturf period, have an improved image with the advent of infilled turf. Today’s synthetic sports surfaces are compiling a much improved safety record, with non-abrasive polyethylene fiber and softer landings compared to the unforgiving asphalt base of Astroturf. Sports surfaces with artificial turf are fast becoming a real-life “field of dreams.”
