Artificial Turf: A generation ago, a popular TV commercial favorably compared the convincing qualities of a margarine and butter, telling viewers: “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.” The modern artificial turf industry can market products with a similar refrain: “As good as grass.” Claiming that synthetic lawns are as good as natural grass is no leap of faith. As homeowners are aware, grass also must be trimmed regularly as it grows, turf is good news because it needs no mowing. As good as grass can look aesthetically when properly maintained, artificial turf has an advantage. No matter the weather, or the quality of the soil, turf looks as good as immaculate grass every day. As performance goes, grass not as good as turf; it breaks down under heavy use and in bad weather. As good as grass is for athletic play turf is better. Turf offers shock absorbency as good as grass with more reliable traction in all conditions and year-round playability.
